Sightseeing Guide

Poudre Canyon
Historic Old Town Fort Collins
Rocky Mountain Natl. Park

Poudre Canyon
The Poudre Canyon is the best sight to see in the Fort Collins area. Beginning ten miles north of Fort Collins on Colorado Highway 14, the canyon climbs sixty miles to Cameron Pass and holds some of the most gorgeous scenic views in the state.

Anglers can find good fly fishing in the Poudre River that flows through the canyon. Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat are common. Most sections of the river are catch-and-release with flies or artificial lures only. For more specific information about fishing regulations and licenses, visit or call Vern's Place. You can find directions to Vern's in your Lakeside KOA site map.

Grey Rock Trail makes for a wonderful hiking trek in the canyon and starts just ten miles up Highway 14. The trail runs either 3 miles or 4.5 miles, depending on which path you choose, and ends at a small pond with a spectacular view.

Those who prefer to remain in the comfort of their air-conditioned car can see plenty from the road by taking a thirty-mile drive up to the town of Rustic. Stop for lunch and a breath of mountain air, then drive back down.

Historic Old Town Fort Collins
Old town offers a number of little shops and nice restaurants, as well as the best ice cream in Colorado. Pick a warm day to complete the walking tour of historical sites like the Fort Collins Museum and the Armstrong Hotel. Then do some shopping, take a trolley ride, and pause for lunch at the Steakout Saloon or one of the many other restaurants dotting the area. Make sure you stop in at Walrus Ice Cream at some point for a sensational taste treat.

Rocky Mountain National Park
Although Big Thompson Canyon is not as beautiful as the Poudre Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park itself has a number of great hiking trails and excellent scenery. Take a look here for more information.
